The --stylize parameter is one of the most misunderstood settings in Midjourney.

Most users know it exists. Far fewer understand what it actually changes - and why the same prompt can produce wildly different results depending on the value you set.

This guide explains exactly what --stylize does, what changes at each major value range, and which value to use for different types of content.

What --stylize actually controls

The --stylize parameter controls how strongly Midjourney applies its own aesthetic training to your output.

At low values Midjourney follows your prompt very literally. It renders what you described with minimal creative enhancement. The result looks accurate but may appear flat or generic because the AI is not adding its own visual interpretation.

At high values Midjourney takes your prompt as a general direction and applies its own sense of beauty, drama, and visual sophistication on top of it. The result often looks more polished and striking but may drift away from your exact description in ways you did not ask for.

Think of it this way. At --stylize 0 Midjourney is a precise technical executor. At --stylize 1000 it is an opinionated creative director who took your brief as a suggestion.

The --stylize parameter accepts values from 0 to 1000. The default is 100. Here is what actually changes across the range:

--stylize 0 to 50 - Maximum prompt adherence

At this range Midjourney follows your prompt as literally as possible. Every element you described appears. Nothing you did not describe is added. The output looks accurate but often lacks the visual sophistication that makes Midjourney outputs striking.

Use this range when: you need exact prompt adherence above all else. Technical diagrams, specific compositional requirements, or any situation where drift from your description would be a problem.

What you lose: Midjourney's natural sense of lighting drama, color harmony, and compositional balance. Images at this range often look flat compared to higher values.

--stylize 100 - The default

The default value applies a moderate level of Midjourney's aesthetic training. It follows your prompt closely while adding enough visual polish to make outputs look intentional rather than mechanical.

This is the right starting point for most brand photography. It respects your brand vocabulary while letting Midjourney improve on the exact literal interpretation of your words.

--stylize 150 to 250 - The brand photography sweet spot

This range is where most professional brand photography outputs land. Midjourney follows your prompt accurately while applying meaningful aesthetic enhancement - better light quality, more sophisticated color relationships, stronger compositional judgment.

At --stylize 200 you get noticeably more polished outputs than at --stylize 100 without meaningful drift from your prompt description. This is the range most brand creators should use as their default.

Use this range when: producing brand photography, product shots, lifestyle imagery, or any content where you want professional aesthetic quality while maintaining brand system accuracy.

--stylize 300 to 500 - Creative enhancement

At this range Midjourney begins to make more autonomous creative decisions. Lighting becomes more dramatic. Color relationships become more sophisticated. Compositional choices become bolder.

Your prompt is still the foundation but Midjourney is now adding significant creative interpretation on top of it. Results at this range often look more striking and editorial than lower values.

The tradeoff: your specific prompt language has less influence. A lighting description that would be followed precisely at --stylize 100 becomes more of a suggestion at --stylize 400.

Use this range when: producing editorial content, mood imagery, or artistic brand content where visual impact matters more than exact prompt adherence. Also useful when your base prompt is already very specific and you want Midjourney to elevate it creatively.

--stylize 600 to 800 - Strong artistic interpretation

At this range Midjourney is firmly in creative director mode. Your prompt provides a general direction and Midjourney makes strong autonomous decisions about how to express it visually.

Outputs at this range often look visually impressive and highly polished but bear a looser relationship to your exact prompt language. Specific details you described may be reinterpreted or softened in favor of overall aesthetic impact.

Use this range when: producing artistic or campaign imagery where striking visual quality is the primary goal and exact prompt adherence is secondary.

--stylize 900 to 1000 - Maximum aesthetic override

At maximum stylize Midjourney treats your prompt as a loose creative brief and produces the most aesthetically sophisticated version of your general concept that it can imagine. The connection to your specific prompt language is weakest here.

Results at this range can be genuinely beautiful but are less predictable and less controllable. Two very different prompts at --stylize 1000 may produce similarly polished-looking results because Midjourney's aesthetic training is doing most of the work.

Use this range when: exploring what Midjourney considers visually ideal for a general concept. Useful for inspiration and creative exploration rather than controlled brand content production.

How stylize interacts with --raw

The --raw parameter and --stylize work in opposite directions and understanding both together gives you full control over output aesthetic.

--raw removes Midjourney's default aesthetic filter entirely. When you use --raw the model follows your prompt literally without any aesthetic enhancement regardless of your stylize value.

This means:

• High --stylize without --raw: strong Midjourney aesthetic interpretation applied on top of your prompt
• High --stylize with --raw: the high stylize value has much less effect because --raw suppresses the aesthetic layer it would normally enhance
• Low --stylize with --raw: maximum literal prompt interpretation with no aesthetic enhancement - the most controlled output possible

For brand photography that needs to look photographic rather than AI-generated, --raw combined with --stylize 100 to 150 produces the most naturalistic results.

How stylize interacts with --chaos

--chaos controls how different the four images in each generation grid are from each other. It does not directly affect aesthetic style but it interacts with --stylize in practice.

At high --stylize values Midjourney is already making autonomous creative decisions. Adding high --chaos on top means those autonomous decisions vary more dramatically between the four outputs. You get four images that are each highly stylized but in noticeably different directions.

At low --stylize values --chaos produces more similar variations because there is less creative interpretation for chaos to amplify.

Practical use: if you want to explore the creative range of a concept at high stylize use --chaos 30 to 50 to see multiple distinct creative interpretations in a single generation.

Stylize values for different content types

Here are the recommended stylize ranges for specific content types based on what actually produces the best results:

• E-commerce product shots on white background: --stylize 50 to 100. Maximum prompt adherence so the product renders accurately.
• Brand photography on styled surfaces: --stylize 150 to 250. Accurate rendering with enhanced aesthetic quality.
• Lifestyle and environmental product shots: --stylize 200 to 350. More creative interpretation acceptable and often improves results.
• Brand mood and atmospheric content: --stylize 300 to 500. Editorial quality and visual impact prioritized over exact prompt adherence.

The stylize parameter and your personalization profile

If you have a Midjourney personalization profile active with --p, your stylize value interacts with your trained aesthetic preferences.

At lower stylize values your personalization profile has more influence relative to Midjourney's general aesthetic training. The output reflects your specific ranked preferences more directly.

At higher stylize values Midjourney's general aesthetic training has more influence and your personalization profile has proportionally less effect. The output reflects a blend of your preferences and Midjourney's broader aesthetic sense.

For brand creators this means: if you have invested time in building a strong personalization profile use lower stylize values (100 to 200) to get the most benefit from it. Higher stylize values partially override your personalization profile with general Midjourney aesthetics.

Practical testing approach

The fastest way to find your optimal stylize value for a specific prompt is to run the same prompt at three values and compare:

Compare the three grids. Which range produces outputs closest to your intended result while adding the most visual quality? That is your target range for this content type.

Save your optimal stylize value in your prompt template for each content type. This way every time you run that template you get consistent results without having to re-test.
