How to Make AI Images Look Less AI-Generated - 12 Specific Fixes

There is a specific look that gives AI images away.

Most people can recognize it immediately even if they cannot describe exactly what is wrong. The skin looks slightly plastic. The lighting is technically correct but somehow flat. Everything is too symmetrical. The textures are too consistent. The whole image has a quality of being perfect in a way that real photographs never are.

The good news is that every one of these problems has a specific cause in your prompt - and a specific fix.

This guide covers 12 prompt additions and parameter changes that make AI images look genuinely photographic rather than obviously generated.

Why AI images look AI-generated

Before covering the fixes it helps to understand the specific mechanisms that produce the AI look.

AI image generators are trained on millions of images including a huge proportion of professionally retouched photography, stock images, and other AI-generated content. This training produces a bias toward visual perfection - images that are technically correct, symmetrical, and free of the natural imperfections that make real photographs feel authentic.

The AI look comes from five specific tendencies:

Perfect symmetry: real faces, environments, and objects are asymmetrical. AI generators produce near-perfect symmetry by default because asymmetry is harder to learn from training data.

Smooth surfaces: real materials have grain, variation, and micro-texture. AI generators produce surfaces that are smooth and consistent in ways that real materials are not.

Generic lighting: AI generators default to balanced, even lighting that is technically correct but lacks the specificity and imperfection of real light in a real space.

Missing depth cues: real photography has specific depth-of-field characteristics, atmospheric perspective, and spatial relationships that AI generators approximate but rarely nail precisely.

Over-sharpening: AI generators tend to produce images that are uniformly sharp across the frame in ways that real lenses with real apertures never are.

Each of these tendencies has a specific prompt fix.

Every one of these problems has a specific cause in your prompt - and a specific fix.

Fix 1 - Specify a camera and lens

This is the single most impactful addition you can make to any prompt for photorealism. Real photographs are taken with specific lenses that have specific optical characteristics - focal length, aperture, depth of field, perspective compression, and natural vignetting.

When you specify a camera and lens Midjourney has to produce an image consistent with those optical characteristics rather than defaulting to its generic rendering approach.

Add to any prompt: 'shot on Canon EOS R5, 85mm lens at f/2.0'

Why 85mm at f/2.0: this is a classic portrait and product lens. At f/2.0 the depth of field is shallow enough to produce natural background separation without looking artificially blurred. The 85mm focal length produces a natural perspective with slight compression that is very close to how human vision perceives depth.

Other effective combinations:

• 100mm macro at f/4.0 for product detail shots where you want edge-to-edge sharpness with minimal background
• 35mm at f/1.8 for environmental lifestyle shots with a more documentary feel
• 50mm at f/2.8 for a natural perspective without compression - often feels most like how humans actually see

Fix 2 - Add --raw parameter

The --raw parameter removes Midjourney's default aesthetic filter. Without --raw Midjourney automatically applies a level of visual polish and beauty enhancement that is one of the primary causes of the AI look.

Adding --raw at the end of your prompt tells Midjourney to follow your description more literally without applying aesthetic enhancement. The result is less polished but significantly more photographic.

For photorealistic content --raw is almost always worth adding. The reduction in aesthetic perfection is the point - it is what makes the image look like a real photograph rather than an AI generation.

Fix 3 - Lower your --stylize value

High --stylize values push Midjourney toward its trained aesthetic ideal which is visually sophisticated but obviously AI-generated. For photorealistic content keep --stylize at 100 or below.

--stylize 50 to 100 with --raw produces the most photographic results. The combination of low stylize and --raw removes most of the AI aesthetic processing and lets the prompt language do the work.

Fix 4 - Add natural imperfection language

Real photographs have imperfections. Adding specific imperfection language to your prompt counteracts the AI tendency toward perfection.

Add phrases like:

• 'natural skin texture, visible pores, subtle skin variation'
• 'slight natural asymmetry'
• 'natural material grain and variation'
• 'subtle lens distortion at edges'
• 'natural color variation in the surface'
• 'slight environmental dust particles in light'

These additions signal to Midjourney that perfection is not the goal. The result is images that feel more like they were captured in a real moment rather than constructed.

Fix 5 - Describe specific light sources

Generic AI lighting looks AI-generated because it is internally consistent in a way that real lighting never quite is. Real light sources have specific positions, temperatures, and behaviors that create inconsistencies.

Instead of: 'good lighting' or 'professional lighting'

Write: 'soft natural window light from the upper left at 45 degrees, warm golden undertones at 5500K, slight light falloff toward the right side of frame, single soft rectangular catchlight'

The specificity of a real light source - its position, temperature, quality, and the specific catchlight it would create - signals photographic authenticity to the model.

Fix 6 - Add film stock references

Specific film stock references introduce the grain, color rendering, and tonal characteristics of real photographic media. These characteristics are the opposite of the AI aesthetic tendency toward clean digital perfection.

Effective film references:

• 'Kodak Portra 400 film grain' - warm, slightly desaturated skin tones with visible grain
• 'Fuji Superia 400' - slightly cooler, more neutral color rendering
• 'analog film photography' - general instruction toward film characteristics
• 'slight film halation around highlights' - a specific optical effect unique to film

Fix 7 - Specify depth of field precisely

Vague depth of field instructions produce generic results. Precise depth of field instructions force Midjourney to render the specific optical behavior of a real lens at a real aperture.

Instead of: 'blurry background'

Write: 'shallow depth of field, subject sharp from eyes to mid-face, slight focus falloff at ears and hair, background rendered at approximately f/2.0 bokeh quality, smooth circular bokeh from background highlights'

The more precisely you describe what is in and out of focus the more the result looks like it was captured with a real lens.

Fix 8 - Add environmental context

AI images look AI-generated partly because they exist in environmental vacuums. Adding specific environmental context - time of day, weather, location - forces the model to render the specific lighting conditions of a real place at a real moment.

Instead of: 'outdoor setting'

Write: 'late afternoon golden hour, 4:30pm October light, slight haze in the background atmosphere, long shadows falling to the left, warm amber quality to the ambient light'

This level of environmental specificity produces images that feel like they were taken at a specific moment rather than rendered in a studio.

Fix 9 - Reference specific photographers or photography styles

Referencing photographers whose work is known for naturalism and authenticity can shift Midjourney's output away from the generic AI aesthetic.

Effective photography style references for photorealism:

• 'documentary photography style'
• 'editorial photography in the style of lifestyle magazines'
• 'commercial product photography'
• 'natural light portraiture'

Avoid referencing photographers by name for legal reasons but style descriptions work well.

Fix 10 - Avoid over-specifying perfection

Paradoxically one cause of the AI look is prompt language that asks for perfection. Words like 'perfect', 'flawless', 'pristine', 'immaculate', and 'ideal' signal to the model that maximum aesthetic quality is the goal - which produces the AI aesthetic.

Review your prompts and remove any language that is asking for perfection. Replace with specific descriptive language instead. Instead of 'perfect skin' write 'natural healthy skin with visible texture'. Instead of 'flawless surface' write 'smooth ceramic surface with subtle variation in the glaze'.

Fix 11 - Add human evidence

One of the strongest signals of photographic authenticity is evidence that humans exist in the world of the image even when no humans are visible. Crumpled fabric, a half-used candle, a coffee cup with a ring mark, slight fingerprints on a glass surface.

These details signal that the image was captured in a real lived space rather than constructed. They are the opposite of the AI tendency toward pristine environments.

Add to lifestyle and environmental prompts: 'lived-in quality', 'slight wear on surfaces', 'evidence of use', 'natural environmental detail'.

Fix 12 - Use negative prompts strategically

The --no parameter lets you explicitly exclude the visual qualities most associated with AI generation.

Add to any prompt seeking photorealism: '--no plastic skin, artificial bokeh, oversaturated colors, HDR effect, perfect symmetry, digital art, illustration, painting, CGI, 3D render, stock photo feel, oversharpened'
